Europe’s largest active volcano

A day on Etna means to immerse in an unspoiled nature, discovering the paths that take you to the most recent volcanic cones, savage lava flows, caves and colourful woods to understand their morphological genesis and natural features. The landscapes frequently alternate the Mediterranean wealthy aspect to the desertic lava fields, over the tree-line, covered in rare pioneer vegetation.

Let us guide you through the imponderable relationship that binds the local man and his rural sites to this “muntagna”, so extravagant in giving mythological ruins and infinite richness.

– Pick-up from your accommodation with the vehicles of Truvatura, transfer to the sky station “Piano Provenzana”, 1800 meters above sea level, where we will visit the remains of the 2002 eruption which completely destroyed the ski resort. After a coffee and the equipment, will start the hike to the craters of the eruption of 2002 (duration about 3 hours trekking medium difficulty level, from 1800 to 2150 meters).
An half-day experience permits to enjoy a 5-7 km path, from the end of the regular road to the volcanic deserts, crossing the amazing colors of the endemic vegetation. You will walk among the volcanic cones of the eruption of 1923 (hornitos), the lava flow of 2002 and the magnificent eruptive craters of the same year.
– After a short stop for lunch, we will visit a running-magma cave equipped with helmets and torches
– 16.00 arrival in Valle Alcantara where, after a general introduction to the Valley and the story of this important part of the island, we’ll visit the famous “Gorge”. Depending on the season, we can descend to the river in the beautiful scenery of the lava organ pipes that constellate the walls into the canyon. Required equipment for the excursion: hiking boots, wind-jacket, packed lunch and water. Otherwise
tell us in advance what you need ( €4 each for the rental of jacket and shoes). In winter we provide snowshoes and sticks.

The hike begins in one of the most important hoods of the reserve and gradually gains the tree-line, a very suggestive walk to discover a unique volcanic ecosystem. The firts target is a running-magma cave that is born near the source of the 1971 lava flow, helmets and torches provided by the guide. Then, a steaper stretch until an unforgettable point of vantage on the Valle del Bove, an immense depression on the eastern slope of the mountain, left by several structrural collapses under the previous volcanic formations in the last thousands years.

After a packed lunch, the trekking continues near the Mt Frumento crater, the second biggest of this volcano from where we can dominate another amazing landscape and the Sartorius craters : a magnificient example of side-eruption in this complex volcanic system.

A run on the black ash will take us back to the car.
